A Swedish/American actress, she came to films in 1932 after a career on stage and as a model.
She was typecast as dark-purposed femme fatales, black widows and "other women."
One of her largest A-picture assignments was as the calculating daughter of Claude Rains in Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Astrid Allwyn left the screen behind her when she retired from films in 1943.
